If in Van Gogh's cyprus paintings the artist’s agitation seems evident in the curved lines, then Gustavo's cyprus reflects in this work stability and perhaps even a kind of loneliness.
After all what else is the tree left to do?! The shadow it creates is narrow and the fruit it grows is not meant to be eaten by men. He can only erect in the middle of the picture and strive upwards.
His vertical lines cross the horizontal joinder of the two dyed metal pieces in the background. Metal dyed in sky - blue, limiting and blocking the view.
