First, this work appears to portray Pygmalion and Galatea’s love story. On his studio’s floor, Gotesman embraces this beloved woman, which he carved in marble. She is perfect, and just as Galatea, she embodies everything his heart desires.

For a moment it seems as though the prophecy may fulfill itself - the woman will come alive, turn around and hold him in her arms. But unlike Galatea, this woman will remain a block of marble.
Not a prayer nor kisses will bring her to life, their love will only be fulfilled with this embrace.
