Maybe  because Umrao Singh Sher-Gil was an amateur  photographer and maybe because he lived in between two centuries: the 19th and the 20thy, moving between two very different countries: Hungary and India, Sher-Gil posed himself the way he did in this self-portrait. Seems to me he ignored the conventional way to show an Indian’s portret, and did not repeat what was accepted in the photography scene of the west.
