Last autumn I visited Esther Kroon’s solo exhibition in FOAM museum, Amsterdam. In her self portraits, I could see the honesty and sensitivity, the same I found in her children’s series photos. Like this one from 1989, Kroon sits on bed, surrounded with hanged wash. Apparently the most ordinary pose for self portrait, all planed to details: the hidden light sources that comes from different directions, the empty walls as background, the bright “frame” around the “dark” figure. On the same time she looks so fragile and vulnerable. Clearly she is not the protagonist we expect to find after the curtain that was lifted.
