These casted faces, from about 100 years ago,looked to me first as death masks. The title under them says: they were done by the anthropologist J.P. Kleiweg de Zwaan as part of his research into the physical characteristics of the human races in the Nias islands. I was wondering why he had to sail to the edge of Dutch East Indies to make his research about human races while he could examine anthropology much closer, such as in The Netherlands.
